KRS-5 Thallium Bromoiodide
Optical Transmission
-
Spectral Range: 0.6 to 40 µm
-
Wave Number Range: 16,666 to 250 cm^-1
-
Note: KRS-5 is a "Deep-IR" specialist. It is the preferred material for Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) prisms and far-infrared windows where other alkali halides fail to transmit.
Solubility & Handling
-
Solubility: 0.05 g / 100g water at 20°C; It is effectively insoluble in water compared to NaCl or KBr, meaning it will not "fog" in humid conditions.
-
Chemical Stability: Resistant to acids but can be etched by strong bases and complexing agents.
-
Handling: WARNING KRS-5 is a Thallium-based compound and is toxic. It can be absorbed through the skin. Always wear gloves and handle with extreme care. Do not use acidic cleaners that could release toxic fumes.
Thermal & Mechanical Properties
-
Melting Point: 414°C
-
Mechanical Nature:Unlike KBr, KRS-5 is "plastic" or "ductile." It does not cleave; instead, it deforms under pressure (cold flow).
-
Mechanical Hardness: * Knoop Hardness: 38.4 to 40.2
