CaF2
Calcium Fluoride
Optical Transmission
-
Spectral Range: 0.13 to 9 µm
-
Wave Number Range: 76,923 to 1,111 cm^-1
-
Note: CaF2 is a premier material for Excimer laser optics (193 nm) and UV spectroscopy. Its low refractive index (1.399 at 5 µm) often eliminates the need for anti-reflective coatings in many infrared applications.
Solubility & Handling
-
Solubility:Insoluble in water (0.0017 g / 100g at 20°C).
-
Environmental Stability:CaF2 is highly resistant to humidity and does not "fog." It is extremely stable in most laboratory and industrial atmospheres.
-
Chemical Stability: Resistant to most acids and alkalis. It is significantly more rugged than BaF2 or the alkali halides (NaCl/KBr).
Thermal & Mechanical Properties
-
Melting Point: 1,418°C
-
Thermal Shock Resistance: CaF2 has a high coefficient of thermal expansion. While more durable than Barium Fluoride, it can still fracture if subjected to extreme temperature gradients (>50°C/min).
-
Mechanical Hardness: * Knoop Hardness: 158
